Writing 'CAD software' instead of the named package

List every package by name, with the modeling environments you know - sheet metal, weldments, surfacing, large assembly - and any certification. Do the same for analysis packages and PLM systems.
Describing projects instead of designs that shipped
'Supported development of a new product' leaves the reader unable to tell whether anything you touched was ever manufactured. Design engineering is judged on whether your work survives contact with a machinist, a supplier and a production line, and that is precisely what these phrasings omit.
For each significant design, state what you owned, the component or assembly count, the processes involved, and whether it reached production and at what volume.
Omitting manufacturing literacy
GD&T, DFM, tolerance stack-up and supplier interaction are the skills that separate an engineer who ships parts from one who models them, and they appear in a large share of postings. Candidates who have this experience routinely fail to mention it because it feels like ordinary work rather than an achievement.
Add a bullet naming a manufacturing constraint you designed around and the cost or yield consequence, plus your GD&T standard experience and released drawing count.
Unquantified engineering outcomes
Mechanical engineering produces unusually measurable results - mass, cost, cycle time, tolerance, failure rate, efficiency - and a resume without them reads as someone who did not track whether their designs worked. That is a poor signal in a discipline built on verification.
Attach a number to every design bullet: grams removed, dollars per unit saved, seconds of cycle time cut, percentage points of yield gained, hours survived in test.
Vague FEA claims
'Performed FEA' is claimed by nearly every applicant and interrogated in every interview. Without the package, the physics and the finding, a reviewer cannot tell whether you ran a serious analysis or clicked through a CAD-integrated wizard, and interviewers assume the latter.
Name the solver, the analysis type, the geometry scale, what the analysis found, and what changed in the design because of it. The design change is the part that proves the analysis mattered.
Embedding CAD renders in the resume file
Images rarely parse, they inflate file size past some application portal limits, and they consume space that drawing counts and cost figures would use better. The visual appeal is also lost on a reviewer scanning a parsed text record rather than your PDF.
Keep the resume text-only and put a portfolio link in the header. Reviewers who want to see the geometry will click, and the rest still get your numbers.
Ignoring FE and PE licensure where it is screened
In HVAC, energy, public works and structural-adjacent roles, licensure is a genuine screening criterion, and candidates who passed the FE years ago often forget to list it. In consumer product and automotive design it is largely irrelevant, so its absence costs nothing there.
List FE and PE status with the state and year whenever you have it. Judge whether to feature it prominently by looking at whether the postings you target mention it at all.
